FRANKFURT -- Infineon Technologies' (NYSE: IFX) leadership in smart card development and marketing was recognized today by international strategic marketing consultants Frost & Sullivan, which cited Infineon's strategy and market position as key factors in awarding the prestigious Market Engineering Leadership Award to the company. "Infineon is a strong player and, despite a challenging year for the entire semiconductor sector, can not be seen as having any major weaknesses. Infineon successfully focused on core competencies, system expertise, and cost leadership to not just stay ahead of its competition, but to increase its share of the market to more than 50 percent in unit volume," comments Anoop Ubhey, smart card Industry Analyst at Frost & Sullivan. Infineon achieved significant growth across the global smart card IC market in 2001, increasing its volume of shipments to 50.7 percent. This constitutes a lead of 24 percent over STMicroelectronics and a more than 40 percent lead over Philips Semiconductors. In individual market segments, Infineon shipped 59.9 percent of smart card memory ICs and 34.5 percent of microcontroller ICs in the segment. The company reinforced its number one position in revenue terms as well, accounting for an estimated 38.9 percent for all types of smart card ICs as measured by Frost & Sullivan. Its closest competitor, Philips Semiconductors, lagged behind with less than half of that by nearly 18 percent, leaving Infineon as the acknowledged leader in revenue share.
