SHENZHEN, China -- On May 17th, which is internationally known as Telecommunications Day, a touring-exhibition vehicle from the East appeared in Frankfort, Germany, signifying the commencement of Huawei Technologies’ new fixed network solution tour exhibition across Europe. For fixed operators in Europe who have survived the “ice age” of telecom, the spring breeze from the East will for sure bring about more choices and opportunities.

In the past few years, fixed operators worldwide experienced their darkest days. On one hand, the mobile subscriber base exceeded that of fixed networks, and fixed traffic volume & revenues went through overall decrease; on the other hand, the IP network, of which fixed operators had put much expectation, even encroached on fixed services in a severe manner, not only due to the lack of profit-making business models but also to the existence of large amount of illegal VoIP services. Higher operating costs and lower service profits -- will the tragedy of Iridium telephony overspread among fixed line networks? A challenge like this is more clearly confronted by operators in Europe. It has increasingly become a common understanding to shape new fixed networks and to rebuild the core competency of fixed line networks.

  • Cutting down on operating costs,
    Promoting broadband services,
Implementing further network consolidation, for the creation of a carrier-grade IP operating environment to allow controllable services,
Delivering service customization and service mobility,
Accomplishing even more rapid service creation capability

All the above-mentioned aspects turned into common understanding among European fixed operators. The new 21CN fixed line architecture of British Telecom was designed against such a background, arousing recognition across the industry.

Huawei Technologies from the East made rapid response to such change in customers’ demands, and launched its brand-new fixed network solution. Huawei’s tour exhibition throughout Europe greatly enlightened the local fixed operators. It’s reported that the demonstration of Huawei’s “New Fixed Network” campaign integrated the company’s latest fixed network solution, involving NGN (Softswitch), NG-AN (next generation access network), data communication, IP bearer network QoS solution (IP telecom network), IP DSLAM, etc. In the meanwhile, Huawei presented its newly developed value-added services, like WorkSpaceTM Unified Communications, triple play over DSL, IP CENTREX, U-PATHTM Communication Assistant, and other service solutions. The European operators, after watching Huawei’s new service demonstration, stated that Huawei’s solutions helped broaden their vision, which could be of great help in sharpening their competitive edge.
