Harmonic announced availability of the new StreamLiner 2000 video server family
April 10, 2007
SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Harmonic Inc. (NASDAQ: HLIT) today announced availability of the new StreamLiner® 2000 video server family, featuring several configurations designed for a wide variety of on-demand video applications. The StreamLiner 2000 product line, used in combination with Harmonic's Armada® intelligent asset manager, can support any content demand profile, easily scaling to accommodate more programming and concurrent streams. As a result, cable and telco service providers enjoy unparalleled flexibility in designing their video-on-demand (VOD) networks and planning subsequent expansions. Built using off-the-shelf hardware from IBM and Hewlett-Packard, the StreamLiner 2000 series offers superior storage and processing power as well as exceptional streaming capacity.
In the VOD network, the StreamLiner software is responsible for ingesting offline and real-time content, and for on-demand streaming of programs as requested by viewers. The expanded range of servers now offers a greater range of performance capacity including:
New high-end storage systems capable of acting as centralized library servers storing dozens of terabytes, or tens of thousands of hours, of popular and niche programming.
New models focused on RAM-based streaming that can distribute thousands of simultaneous streams from a compact two rack-unit (2-RU) system.
Integration with Harmonic's service-centric NMX Digital Service Manager™ for seamless management of the entire broadcast and on-demand video infrastructure.
Models using a mix of RAM and hard disk drive technology as well as smaller-scale storage servers are also available.
"Harmonic's StreamLiner 2000 platform offers the most flexible expansion paths compared to other video server brands," said Shahar Bar, Director of On-Demand Solutions for Harmonic Inc. "Our systems lower capital and operating expenditures by offering our customers a multitude of expansion options, all of which are non service-affecting. StreamLiner allows service providers to expand either an operational server or add new servers to the cluster, giving them the most versatility in their network and simplifying service management."
StreamLiner also maximizes operators' flexibility with a pay-as-you-grow software licensing model, allowing them to invest in a higher capacity server without paying for unused streams. Reliability is ensured with redundant system-level components and multicast-based clustering technology that provides fail-over and load balancing.
