Frans Spaargaren replaces Yves Guillaumot as chief financial officer and executive vice president at Gemplus

LUXEMBOURG -- Gemplus International S.A. (Euronext: LU0121706294 - GEM and NASDAQ: GEMP), the world's leading provider of smart card enabled solutions, today announced the appointment of a new Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President, Frans Spaargaren, effective June I, 2004

Frans Spaargaren replaces Yves Guillaumot, who, after 6 years in Gemplus, will leave the Company to pursue other interests.

Frans Spaargaren, age 48, of Dutch nationality, was formerly Executive Vice President of Philips International, with responsibility for it's joint venture operations. Before that he was CFO of Philips Components. Prior to that he was with Varta Batteries, where he held various financial and general management positions and operational experience.
