Dr. Neuhaus Techno Nord invests €1M in Garderos's second financing round, led by Wellington Partners

HAMBURG, Germany -- Munich-based Garderos Software Innovations GmbH isone of the leading software providers for WLAN (wireless local area network) management.

The investment of Hamburg-based venture capital company Dr. Neuhaus Techno Nordmarks the successful closing of Garderos’ second round of funding, in which lead investorWellington Partners and SAP Ventures also participated. The new funding puts Garderos onthe fast lane. The successful software engineers around founder and CEO Hans Christensen(36) intend to use the fresh capital primarily for expanding the company’s softwaredevelopment team. "With a broader product portfolio, we are planning to enter new regionaland vertical markets, and thus to accelerate our growth."

Garderos was spun out of Siemens AG in March 2002. As shareholder of Garderos,Siemens provided the young company with all necessary patents. Garderos continued thedevelopment of the software, which proved to be a success: Today, it runs on robust linuxservers as well as on embedded Linux appliances. The Garderos architecture enables bothfixed and mobile network operators to deploy and manage powerful and scalable PublicWLANs. Garderos’ software comes with an interface to the most widely used access andaccounting platforms. "Thanks to the close collaboration with Siemens and our high pace ofinnovation, we have already managed to market installations around the globe", is the wayChristensen comments on the company’s successes.

Recent market studies expect the demand in the area of Public WLANs to grow dramatically– the number of Public WLAN hotspots is to rise to 145,000 worldwide by 2006, with anestimated 65 million users. Matthias Grychta, Managing Partner of Dr. Neuhaus TechnoNord, views a tremendous market potential for Garderos: "The interaction of services, whichis already taken for granted in mobile phone communications today, will be a challenge forWLANs tomorrow." Challenges are: access control, accounting and roaming. These hurdleshave to be overcome in order to get growing acceptance and access to mass markets.Grychta continues: "We regard the core technology and the products, the internationallyexperienced team, the existing cooperation agreements and the consortium of investors as asound basis for Garderos’ successful development."
