SOMERSET, N.J. -- EMCORE Corporation (NASDAQ: EMKR), a leading provider of compound semiconductor technologies for global communications, today announced the first design win for its QTR 3400 SmartLinkTM Media Converter. In addition, EMCORE announced that four key customer accounts have designed in the media detection circuitry, enabling the deployment of SmartLink Media Converters in their applications, and are in the process of system validation of the QTR 3400.

“We are very excited by the growing acceptance of our SmartLinkTM technology within the industry, as well as for our entire portfolio of products that support 10 gigabit Ethernet (10G Ethernet), Infiniband, and Fibre Channel.” said Robert Bryan, Vice President of EMCORE Fiber Optics. “The SmartLink Media Converter product family is targeted as a cost-effective 10 gigabit-per-second (10 Gb/s) copper cable replacement in the data center and central office.”

Dr. Bryan added, “We are seeing strong demand from leading providers of enterprise networks who want a 10 Gb/s optical solution for applications up to 300 meters.”

The SmartLinkTM QTR 3400 Media converter is a member of EMCORE’s growing product portfolio targeted at the expanding 10G Ethernet, Infiniband and Fibre Channel markets. In addition to SmartLinkTM, EMCORE also offers the ECX-7700 four-channel CX4 XENPAK module and the ELX-7100 XENPAK transceiver, which is compliant with 10GBASE-LX4, the highly versatile wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) format within the IEEE 802.3ae standard for 10G Ethernet.

SmartLinkTM, a 10 Gb/s patent-protected media converter solution, uses fiber optics to extend the current copper socket throughout the data center or central office up to 300 meters. It is socket compatible with existing copper cable interfaces and enables field flexibility to data center operators requiring copper or optical solutions. This latest innovation from EMCORE is capable of carrying an aggregate of 10 Gb/s by adding four lanes of 3.125 Gb/s, for bi-directional communication over one 12-fiber ribbon cable.

In addition, the QTR3400 module works seamlessly with Emcore’s ECX-7700 copper XENPAK modules. The ECX-7700 provides the most cost-effective and reliable 10 Gigabit per second (Gb/s) transport up to 15 meters over shield twisted-pair copper cabling. The ECX-7700 has a built-in media detection circuitry (MDC), which enables power to be intelligently applied through the MDI socket and enables the ECX-7700 product to be extended through the Emcore SmartLinkTM up to 300 meters in the data center. The intelligent power also enables future applications such as electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) or active equalization to be integrated into the active cable.
