Deutsche Telekom's 'open RAN' plan slips after Huawei reprieve
Deutsche Telekom had promised 3,000 open RAN sites by the end of 2026, but the date has now been changed to 2027. And Germany's refusal to ban Huawei has implications.
Corning and Luminent will demonstrate the first-ever full-spectrum CWDM transmission on Corning SMF-28e optical fiber at OFC
March 14, 2002
CORNING, N.Y. -- Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW - news), a world-leading supplier of optical fiber, and Luminent, Inc., an MRV Company, (Nasdaq: MRVC - news), a leading provider of active and passive fiber-optic components and subsystems for the metro and access markets, will demonstrate the first-ever full-spectrum coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) transmission on Corning® SMF-28e(TM) optical fiber at OFC 2002, March 19-22, in Anaheim, California. Coarse wavelength division multiplexing is a technique to transmit a large number of channels on a fiber by widely spacing channels across a large wavelength range, unlike dense WDM, which closely spaces channels across a narrow wavelength range. The wide channel spacing facilitates the use of less expensive lasers and WDM passive components since the center wavelength of the equipment does not need to be as precisely controlled. Corning and Luminent have teamed up to demonstrate the capabilities of full-spectrum CWDM transmission as a cost-effective solution for unamplified metro and access networks, using SMF-28e fiber, which is optimized for full-spectrum transmission. This capability is enabled by SMF-28e fiber's lower water peak attenuation in the 1360 to 1460 nm operating window and Luminent's lasers. Channels transmitted in this window on SMF-28e fiber will show better signal performance than on standard single-mode fiber. ``Luminent's leadership in CWDM spans more than 2 years and encompasses superior technology in DFB lasers as well as Thin Film Filters. This 16-channel demonstration exemplifies our commitment to providing cost-effective solutions that meet the increasing bandwidth demands of our customers in the metro and access markets,'' said Uri Levy, President of Luminent, Inc. ``Knowing Corning's leadership in both fiber quality and innovation, Corning was a good fit for us in demonstrating a CWDM solution.''
