SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Proxim Corporation , a global leader in wireless networking equipment for Wi-Fi and broadband wireless networks, announced today that Proxim and its partner, Forth Research Institute, a subsidiary of DaTang Telecom Inc., have been awarded a frame contract by China Telecom to provide point-to-multipoint broadband wireless solutions in 10 provinces in China.

Deployments are already underway in the Tianjin municipality and the Shanxi province to deliver high-speed Internet access and Voice over IP services to residential and enterprise customers.

"We are very excited to have achieved this important win with Proxim," said Gai Xinhua, director of the Forth Research Institute. "Proxim's Tsunami broadband wireless products are easy to deploy, highly reliable and meet the high capacity requirements of large voice and data networks."

"China is a very important market for Proxim, and our deployment with China Telecom extends our market leadership in this country," said Kevin Duffy, Chief Operating Officer at Proxim. "Our license-exempt 5.8GHz broadband wireless solutions are ideally suited to situations where licensed spectrum is not providing sufficient capacity or for competitive service providers who do not have licensed spectrum and want to offer competitive services quickly, reliably and cost-effectively."

As the largest service provider in China, China Telecom has local access networks in 21 provinces in the south and west, and 10 branch corporations in the 10 provincial regions. China Telecom is deploying Proxim's 5.8 GHz license-exempt broadband wireless products to expand capacity beyond the current licensed spectrum to meet market demand for high speed Internet access and voice over IP services. China Telecom selected Proxim's Tsunami Multipoint products because of their high capacity, flexibility and fast, simple installation. Forth Research Institute will supply the equipment and provide maintenance services and technical support for Proxim products to China Telecom.

Through active collaboration with Proxim's partners in China, all major service providers in China are deploying Proxim's wireless networking solutions for applications such as voice and data backhaul, public hot spots, and last-mile broadband access.
