TORONTO -- Celestica Inc. (NYSE, TSX: CLS), a global provider of innovative electronics manufacturing services (EMS), today announced the release of its OBSAI (Open Base Station Architecture Initiative) compliant WiMAX 802.16 Base Station and Remote Radio Head (RRH). The offering, collaboratively developed with Intel Corporation (NASDQ: INTC), is a key offering in Celestica’s communications platforms roadmap.

The Base Station and Remote Radio Head will provide Celestica’s customers in the communications, industrial and military sectors with an easily customizable solution that enables them to shrink their product design cycle and achieve full lifecycle solutions at the lowest total cost and fastest time-to-market.

OBSAI is an industry initiative driven by leading base station vendors, module and component manufacturers. It defines a basic modular architecture and detailed specifications for internal interfaces between modules and aims to create an open market for cellular base stations. As an OBSAI member, Celestica has created a Base Station and Remote Radio Head to help its customers realize the full benefit of this standard in the telecommunications market.

Based on Celestica’s expertise in design, engineering and manufacturing for the telecommunications sector, the WiMAX Base Station and Remote Radio Head are non-productized, pre-engineered WiMAX platform solutions that do not compete with original equipment manufacturers’ (OEMs’) intellectual property or market position. Based on existing Celestica designs and the Intel Netstructure® WiMAX Baseband Card, also known as “Glenfield”, the RRH solution accelerator model customizes designs and services to meet customers’ market-specific needs.

“The communications landscape is increasingly based on wireless technologies, including WiMAX, delivered by open architecture platforms,” said Paul Barsley, Vice President, Design and Engineering Services, Celestica. “Our Celestica designed OBSAI compliant WiMAX Base Station and Remote Radio Head leverages Intel Netstructure® WiMAX Baseband Card to provide our customers with a cost-effective and customizable way of implementing WiMAX technology into their products.”
