On 1 June 2011, BIPT launched a call for candidates to participate in the auction of licences in the 2.6 GHz-band (4G licences). 5 applications have been submitted. Those applications will now be analysed by BIPT. A notification on their admissibility will follow in the days to come.

Apart from the frequency blocks in the 2500-2570 MHz and 2620-2690 MHz frequency bands (FDD spectrum), also the 2575-2620 MHz frequency block (TDD spectrum) will be put up for auction.

The auction will start on Monday, 28 November 2011. The results of the auction will be published immediately after it has ended. The acquired user rights are valid for 15 years starting from 1 July 2012.

Earlier this year, the fourth 3G licence was acquired by NV Telenet Tecteo Bidco. Belgacom, Mobistar and KPN Group Belgium have had a 3G licence since 2001. Up to now, no operators have any user rights in the 2.6 GHz band in Belgium.
