FREMONT, Calif. -- Avanex Corporation (Nasdaq: AVNX) has chosen the Optical Fiber Communications Conference and Exposition (OFC 2004) as the stage to showcase its new PowerNode(TM) Flexible Optical Layer Solution, a multi-purpose platform that enhances Avanex's ability to provide network-ready subsystems based on the company's field- proven optical modules and components.

The PowerNode platform will be featured in a live demonstration in Booth #1309 at OFC 2004, which is being held Feb 22-27 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The PowerNode platform is Avanex's leading low-cost integrated solution for the optical layer. It significantly expands the functionality of Avanex's line of network-ready optical modules and subsystems by enabling either plug-and-play deployment or customization for a range of wavelength management needs. The addition of the PowerNode platform greatly enhances the current portfolio of Avanex's network-ready solutions, which have been designed-in by major systems houses and have been in service at various carriers over the past two years.

Based on a 1RU chassis qualified for 19- and 23-inch racks, the PowerNode platform provides a managed solution for applications such as link extension through EFDAs, wavelength multiplexing and demultiplexing, optical add/drop multiplexing, dispersion compensation, optical monitoring for service-level agreement (SLA) management and line protection switching for restoration. It can be accessed and controlled by the network management systems and can be upgraded remotely with software. In addition, the PowerNode platform provides mechanical, optical, electrical and alarm-handling features that enable it to operate as a stand-alone network element.

"One of the strongest benefits of our PowerNode platform is that it adds a high degree of flexibility to our suite of field-proven components and subsystems," Dr. Giovanni Barbarossa, chief technology officer and vice president, product development of Avanex, said. "It is modular, so it can be scaled as needed. It is highly adaptable to customer needs, whether that need is plug-and-play deployment or customization for virtually any specific application or combination of applications. The PowerNode platform tangibly illustrates Avanex's commitment to close collaboration with customers to develop custom solutions for local access, enterprise, metro, long-haul and ultra-long-haul optical networks."

In applications where reduced time to market and minimum complexity are at a premium, the PowerNode platform can be designed for plug-and-play deployment. The standardized modular shelf means low initial cost with the capacity for expansion as demands require. Despite its small footprint it can host multiple applications.

In applications where customization is a critical factor, the PowerNode platform's standard shelf can be reconfigured quickly for any application on the optical layer. Because the platform is scaleable, it can support new and expanded applications without additional development costs.

Its broad range of possible applications illustrates the flexibility of the PowerNode platform. Those applications include

  • extending a point-to-point link,

  • compensating for additional losses in a link,

  • mux/demux of multiple WDM services,

  • increasing the number of WDM services on a fiber,

  • enabling 10G services on an existing link,

  • providing monitoring ports for SLA,

  • providing protection switching for restoration,

  • providing drop-and-continue capability.

The PowerNode platform is expected to begin customer trials early next quarter.
