Burlingame, Calif. -- Astral Point Communications Inc. said today it will ship this month the world's first network-wide distributed digital cross-connect transport system. Astral Point is the first to deliver such a service directly mapped to Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical networks. This allows carriers to provide popular leased line services combined with leading edge optical services from a common platform.

"Carriers need to provision services quickly, manage costs efficiently and troubleshoot networks thoroughly," said Tony Thakur, Time Warner Telecom's vice president of technologies and architectures. "This network-wide distributed digital cross connect is innovative in meeting those needs and should also allow carriers to scale their networks more effectively than with a centralized system."
