SYDNEY, Australia and SAN JOSE, Calif. -- ArrayComm, the world leader in mobile broadband wireless and smart antenna technologies, today announced that its subsidiary, Personal Broadband Australia, Pty. (PBBA), has completed an extensive customer trial of its iBurst(TM) Personal Broadband system in Sydney, Australia. PBBA's pre-commercial iBurst network covers more than 100 square km and 1 million people with just 6 base stations and is the industry's first deployment of truly mobile broadband service on this large scale. More than 400 users from a variety of customer segments were given two months of unlimited access to the network throughout Sydney via PCMCIA-card modems (developed and now manufactured in volume by ArrayComm licensee Kyocera Corporation) installed in their own laptop computers.

Robust user data rates of 1 Mbps were demonstrated in urban ranges of up to 5 km, with speeds of up to 600 kbps seen at 12 km. User experiences of multi-wall indoor penetration from out-of-sight base stations more than 4 km away abounded. The seamless mobility supported by the iBurst protocol was demonstrated by immediate and transparent BTS-to-BTS handovers throughout the system, and maintenance of 1 Mbps user data rates at up to 80 kph. Trial participants used a wide variety of common Internet applications, off-the-shelf computing platforms, and standard operating systems, requiring no more than a few minutes of self-guided modem installation at the outset of the trial.

The trail users' feedback on the unique experience of iBurst technology was universally positive:

"THIS ROCKS! I love it . . . The productivity and stress removal of this technology is so great . . . Is there any chance of getting 2 more trial user packs?" -- Emilia Kahrimanis, Country Manager, Portal Software

"I am currently on a ferry to Rosebay, sending you this thank you Email, while I read my mail, browse the Internet and even control my servers over VPN at an amazing speed. The iBurst service is just spectacular and allows me to optimize my time and be more productive wherever I am." -- Shlomi Shaki, Systems Manager, Mercury Interactive Australia

"We have loaned iBurst cards to some of our customers and they can immediately see the potential iBurst offers for their business. We are planning to integrate iBurst into our Mobile Office solutions so that our customers can use it to access their office applications while they are on the move." -- Chris Carlisle, GM Solutions, Telecom New Zealand Australia

"People were highly envious when they inquired how I had connected and when I told them of the speed of the connection." -- John L. Loebenstein, Group Executive -- IT, St. George Bank Ltd.

"iBurst significantly improved the productivity of my life." -- Tina Kim, Akamai Technologies Australasia

"I have enjoyed using it immensely and have been the envy of both my workmates and clients." -- Ian Carpenter, National Sales Manager, Axe Group

"Corporates, after using the service, will wonder how they survived without it." -- Tony Mulry, Managing Director, Echo Solutions

Concurrent with the user trial, extensive engineering evaluations of the system's performance in the challenging urban Sydney environment have shown it to meet or exceed pre-deployment expectations. The trial has validated conclusively the tremendous advantages ArrayComm's fully-adaptive smart antenna technology provides in real-world wireless networks.

"I have managed operators through the typically difficult early commercial deployment stages of several wireless technologies over the years, and ArrayComm's iBurst technology combined with Kyocera's product development and manufacturing have given the most rock-solid performance I've ever seen," said Charles Reed, CEO of Personal Broadband Australia. "Given the remarkable success of this technical trial, we are moving at full speed to put the finishing touches on the back end systems and other parts of our operation, and we are anxious to go live with commercial customers later this year."

"We are delighted by the success of our iBurst strategy in this and our other trials in Asia," said Sam Endy, ArrayComm's President and CEO. "The feedback is consistent -- our decision to design a truly mobile broadband wireless solution from the ground up to take maximum advantage of our unique smart antenna technology, as well as our business model choice of entrusting carrier-grade equipment development, manufacturing, and support to those who do it best (such as Kyocera and LG Electronics), are paying handsome returns in the form of unmatched system performance and traction with major operators."
