PARIS -– Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA), today announced that it has won multiple mobile expansion contracts from China Unicom, one of China’s leading mobile communication service providers. The total value of the contracts exceeds USD40 million. The contracts were won through Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Alcatel’s flagship Chinese company.
Under the terms of the contracts, Alcatel will provide CDMA network solutions to help China Unicom expand the capacity of the existing CDMA network solutions in Shanghai, Hebei and Tianjin. Alcatel will also provide CDMA solutions to help the operator to optimize the CDMA networks in 10 provinces and autonomous cities including Beijing, Shanxi, Sichuan.
In addition, Alcatel will supply its Evolium™ global GSM solutions to optimize China Unicom’s networks in 13 provinces and autonomous cities, including Beijing, Shandong, Shanghai and Zhejiang. The Evolium™ multi-standard platform integrates all technologies, from GSM/GPRS to EDGE and UMTS and allows all solutions in one for a smooth upgrade of existing networks. When the project is completed at the end of this year, China Unicom will be able to offer more value-added services, with higher quality and reliability, to its customers.
