PARIS and VIENNA -- Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA), and tele.ring, the fastest growing Austrian mobile operator, today announced that Alcatel was selected by tele.ring as partner for its HSDPA introduction in Austria. Following lab tests carried out within tele.ring during the second quarter 2005, a field introduction program is now planned for Vienna beginning in the second half of 2005, with a representative sample of residential and corporate users.

Based on the results evaluation of this program, tele.ring is envisaging a commercial launch of its HSDPA service in the first half of 2006, thus expediting the development of HSDPA-powered new mobile broadband services in Austria. As HSDPA allows faster transmission of larger data files, the usage of mobile Internet from a laptop as well as the access to large amounts of data while on the move turns out to be a child's play.

As part of this introduction, users will be able to benefit from mobile broadband access with data rate up to 1.8 Mb/s while travelling. Therefore, they can enjoy a completely mobile broadband experience while staying linked to the Internet.

Alcatel had already supplied tele.ring with its EvoliumTM solution for the operator's GSM/GPRS commercial service. Leveraging the natively multi-standard EvoliumTM design, the introduction of the UMTS capability in tele.ring's network was carried out by Alcatel in December 2003 by an upgrade of the operator's existing GSM/GPRS network in selected coverage areas. This was accomplished along with the necessary density increases in the network. With the future introduction of HSDPA, tele.ring will therefore be the first truly multi-standard commercial network in the world, offering GSM, GPRS, UMTS and HSDPA on the same infrastructure technology.

"tele.ring has always been focusing its activities on customer value," declared Elmar Grasser, chief technology officer of tele.ring. "Leveraging Alcatel's commitment to innovation, we will be in a position to offer our subscribers the most exciting broadband mobile experience, combining the best offer with the best-of-breed HSDPA technological solution. "

"HSDPA is an integral part of Alcatel's Evolium concept," said Marc Rouanne, chief operating officer of Alcatel's mobile communications activities. "Partnering with tele.ring for their HSDPA introduction, we are able to leverage the full multi-standard capability of our EvoliumTM infrastructure in order to bring them a quickly deployed, cost-effective and predictable HSDPA solution, and to provide tele.ring's subscribers with the maximum benefits of mobile broadband."
