PARIS -- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced it has been awarded a contract to deploy a CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A (Rev. A) high-speed wireless network on the island of Macau for China Unicom, a leading Chinese telecommunications service provider.

Under the terms of the contract, Alcatel-Lucent will provide incremental hardware and software upgrades to existing CDMA2000 base stations supplied by the former Lucent Technologies. Once the upgrades are complete, China Unicom will be able to provide high-speed mobile data services such as broadcasting and video telephony to users across Macau.

In total Alcatel-Lucent has deployed 10 CDMA2000 networks for China Unicom across China. It expects that the EV-DO Rev. A network it installs in Macau will serve as a showcase that demonstrates the ease with which existing CDMA2000 1X networks can be upgraded and the benefits a high-speed wireless data network can deliver to operators and their customers.

“This win with China Unicom in Macau is significant because it shows that Alcatel-Lucent is already delivering on the promise set out during the merger,” said Frederic Rose, President of Alcatel-Lucent Asia Pacific. “The company now occupies a leading position in wireless thanks to the combined assets of the former Alcatel and Lucent and the recent acquisition of UMTS access components from Nortel,” he added.
