CANNES, France -- Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announces that Alcatel's Multimedia Messaging Services (MMS) technology is demonstrating a world performance record in the Intel booth at 3GSM World Congress 2004. In Cannes, this powerful MMS platform is processing at least 150 MMS/second at a sustained rate with the complete MMS cycle on a Linux-powered Intel configuration featuring three dual-processor Intel® Xeon? CPU boards. This represents more than half a million MMS processed per hour, a new industry record. This unique performance proves, in a live and public environment, the high performance and scalability of Alcatel's MMS platform.

This new performance exceeds from benchmarks published in 2003 showing performance of at least 50 MMS/second on a single dual-processor Intel® Xeon CPU board. Today, after the numerous commercial MMS deployments and anticipating mobile operators' need for seamless multimedia services ramp-up, Alcatel demonstrates how simple it is to scale its MMS solution.

As the Alcatel's MMS solution uses a Linux operating environment, it allows the operators to significantly reduce their CAPEX and OPEX. Moreover, its innovative proxy based architecture allows operators to increase revenues by adding capacity to any existing messaging system. Thanks to specialized software components, it provides them with high availability even during usage peaks. It also allows flexible charging policies through integration with any payment solution. As a result, it offers a highly cost-effective, flexible and scalable solution to help operators face the challenge of MMS service launch and ramp-up.

"Intel values its on-going cooperation with Alcatel", declared Abhi Talwalkar, Intel's vice president and COO in charge of products for the plates-forms. "Today's performance demonstrates the perfect match between Alcatel's MMS solution and the high performance of the industry leading Intel® Xeon? processor family."

"Mobile operators world-wide need more and more powerful MMS solutions" declared Jean-Michel Cornille, President of Alcatel's mobile solutions activities. "The intrinsic performance of Alcatel's MMS solution - and in particular its very high performance/cost ratio - has been a key criterion for operators who selected Alcatel's MMS solution."
