PARIS -- Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) and Ascom Wireless Solutions today announced the signature of a strategic alliance to immediately deliver enterprise wireless solutions, enhancing workers' mobility and personal security in potentially hazardous and isolated jobs.

This unique market offer is targeted to medium and large enterprises or organizations with mobile and remote workers in hazardous work environments, such as medical, government, correctional, energy and manufacturing/production industries. Thus, nuclear power plant operators, heavy industry plant operators or prison guards will benefit from untethered communications, remote alarm or signal monitoring, and safety features such as alarm triggering from panic button, from pull-cord emergency, and from so-called "man down" and immobility detection.

"We want to provide features to help enterprises involved in potentially dangerous situations to communicate. So that, if an isolated employee is working in a chemical plant and there is a dangerous leak, he can monitor the alarm signal and call for help. His mobile phone can also do it for him in case he is involved in an accident or otherwise incapacitated," stressed Jean-Luc Fourniou, Chief Operating Officer for Alcatel Enterprise Networking.

The joint Alcatel-Ascom enterprise wireless solution includes two DECT handsets, provided by Ascom and supported by Alcatel radio base station equipment: the Messenger and the Protector. Both models are rugged and water & dust proofed (IP64). The Protector model offers the alarm signal monitoring, immobility detection and panic button features. These two Ascom handsets complement Alcatel's existing DECT handset offer.

"Mobility is critical to Alcatel's communications strategy. Our rich mobility architecture, combined with features of Ascom's enterprise wireless handsets, will serve the critical needs of this highly demanding market segment," Jean-Luc Fourniou added.

The Alcatel-Ascom solution is designed to enable businesses to quickly and easily deploy enterprise wireless technology and connect with corporate telephony and Internet Protocol (IP)-based communications infrastructures. Furthermore, this joint solution integrates seamlessly with Alcatel's flagship OmniPCX Enterprise call switching and advanced communications hardware.

In addition, Ascom will provide the Alarm Management Server, allowing workers to monitor and respond to alarm signals and Alcatel will deliver all the features of advanced corporate telephone systems - such as dial-by-name directory services.

"The partnership with Alcatel enables us to sell our leading solutions for the industry and health care segments into the vast installed base of Alcatel customers thereby expanding our sales across Europe and other parts of the world," said Roel Ottink, manager of OEM and Partnership Sales at Ascom.
