BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Airspan Networks Inc. (Nasdaq:AIRN), a leading world-wide provider of WiMAX-based broadband wireless access networks, carrier class Voice over Internet Protocols (VoIP) and Wi-Fi Hotzone systems, today announced the availability of the AS.MAX MicroMAX base station and ProST Wi-Fi access point for deployment in the Public Safety and Municipal Wireless markets in the US.

The system is available in the licensed 4.9GHz band for Public Safety applications and in the unlicensed 5.8GHz band for Municipal Wireless systems. By combining 802.11 Wi-Fi for access and 802.16 WiMAX for back-haul in a single integrated package, Airspan provides the benefits of WiMAX range, capacity and quality of service together with the flexibility of Wi-Fi at no extra cost.

Airspan believes that the combination of WiMAX and Wi-Fi will have several significant advantages over traditional Wi-Fi mesh networks in public safety and municipal networks. The WiMAX architecture allows growth in both coverage and number of users without degradation in performance. Traditional Wi-Fi-only mesh systems need to add hops to expand coverage, and a large number of hops typically results in severe performance loss. When deployed in a Municipal Wireless network, AS.MAX will provide consistent performance while enabling the operator to offer additional and different service levels to customers, broadening their revenue opportunities. Wi-Fi mesh networks have no ability to create different levels of services for different customers. The cost of the total solution is comparable with the cost of a Wi-Fi mesh solution.

“Our solution leverages the phenomenal success of Wi-Fi, with the performance and quality of service of WiMAX,” said Eric Stonestrom, President and Chief Executive Officer of Airspan Networks. “Wi-Fi-only mesh solutions have been shown not to scale as the number of hops grows. With our solution, municipalities and operators can get the best of both worlds at no extra cost.”
