Startup carrier buys 8.9 million miles of Corning fiber for more than $1 billion

Aerie Networks, the first company to introduce Mass Produced BandwidthSM and User Defined NetworksSM, today announced that Corning Incorporated [NYSE:GLW] would supply Corning® LEAF® optical fiber for all of Aerie's planned 20,000-mile nationwide broadband network. The overall value of the supply agreement for 8.9 million fiber miles (14.24 million fiber kilometers) is estimated to be worth in excess of $1 billion over the next four years.
"After securing access to 14,958 miles of rights of way from 12 energy pipeline and communications companies, our agreement with Corning achieves our next critical milestone by securing the fiber supply for the entire build-out of Aerie network," said Peter Geddis, Aerie chief executive officer.
