Huawei Summit Establishes Industry Alliance to Accelerate Digital Operation Transformation

BARCELONA -- On February 21, Huawei hosted the Digital Operation Transformation Summit, together with TM Forum, the global industry association for digital business; and Light Reading, a multichannel news and information provider. The event occurred at the Fira Center, Crowne Plaza Barcelona; the Summit focused on advancing digital businesses and driving future opportunities for operators and enterprises through an industry alliance that promotes open innovation and collaboration.

The rapid development of the digital world has significantly changed user behaviour, creating a new pattern of traffic consumption featuring five characteristics: real-time, on-demand, all-online, DIY, and social (ROADS). To deliver the ROADS user experience, operators and enterprises not only need to construct future-oriented infrastructure that ensures efficient operation and agile innovation, but should also focus on the creation of an open industry ecosystem where all players along the digital value chain collaborate and contribute.

"There is no doubt digital disruption is redefining customer expectations. For operators and enterprises to succeed in this digital world and retain their competitiveness, digital cannot simply be an afterthought, it needs to become the center of their operations that creates new ways of serving customers," said William Xu, Executive Director of the Board and Chief Strategy Marketing Officer of Huawei. "This digital transformation demands fresh thinking and diverse perspectives. This Summit provided a unique opportunity for operators and enterprises to engage in helpful discussions with wide-ranging experts on the challenges, strategies and best practice digital solutions to transform and innovate, driving rich digital experiences for users and ultimately a better-connected future."

Peter Sany, President and CEO of TM Forum, said, "The pace of change is accelerating at an unprecedented rate and future opportunities for operators and enterprises will depend on understanding the true value of transforming their operations in the digital age. The event provided the inspiration and knowledge for key players to continue to transform and take advantage of digital technology and strategies to deliver engaging customer experiences."

"Today's digital leaders need to focus on the most exciting and challenging issues of our time, and center their thinking and strategies on user-focused digital innovation while fostering open collaboration. That's why a strategic platform like the Digital Operations Transformation Summit is valuable to the entire industry," said Stephen Saunders, CEO and Founder of Light Reading.

The Summit brought together leaders from telecommunication operators, enterprises, international bodies and research firms, to inform and inspire on opportunities within the evolving digital landscape. With informative presentations and debates among industry leaders, participants explored today's most pressing digital challenges and growth opportunities in building a digital operation system and the enabling ecosystem.

Speakers and panelists at the Summit included:

John Donovan, Chief Technology Officer, AT&T
Michael Doncun, President, Consumer, Telefónica
Matt Beal, Director, Innovation & Architecture, Vodafone
Henrik Östhed, Managing Director, Accenture
Crawford Del Prete, Executive Vice President, IDC
James McQuivey, Vice President, Forrester Research
Caroline Chappell, Principle Analyst, Heavy Reading
Barry O'Reilly, Founder & CEO, Antennae; Founder, ExecCamp

Roundtable discussions also hosted representatives from Verizon, Orange, Swisscom, MTN Group, Bharti Airtel, Indosat, China Mobile, Accenture, Deloitte, Gartner, Ovum, Amdocs, IBM and Microsoft. These stakeholders shared insights, strategies and experiences in an open and constructive manner around the most critical issues in the digital operation transformation, and agreed to work towards forming an industry alliance to foster innovation and drive digital businesses in the future. Over 30 C-suite executives from top-tier telecom operators around the world attended the event.

Also announced at the event were results from a survey conducted for the Digital Operation Transformation Summit by Heavy Reading and TM Forum. Nearly 75% of respondents said network virtualization will accelerate the design process for new services, while only 20% felt virtualization would make service design more complex. The respondents, representing nearly 50 different CSPs worldwide, also said that the most important impact of digital operations is to create the right digital experience for users – meaning online, on-demand, and real-time access to network services.

Huawei's backbone solution for carriers' digital operation transformation is Telco OS, a future-oriented solution and operation system. It provides a fast response to customer needs through the orchestration of business-enabling functions, infrastructure-enabling functions and a big data engine. It is not only a platform and software/hardware products, but also a strong enabling system which covers the entire lifecycle of telco resource, service and operations management, and delivers ROADS-style services to end users and businesses.

Huawei has successfully helped global carriers benefit from the Telco OS solution and implemented a number of transformation projects for customers, including China Mobile, Orange, Maxis and China Unicom.
