TAIPEI -- Broptics Communications Corp, the only fiber Bragg gratings manufacture in Taiwan, has extended its engineering efforts and manufacture capacity to the fiber optic sensor applications. Fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) has been regarded as the most accurate and sensitive sensor component for strain and temperature measurement. The center wavelength position of FBG shifts according to the strain and temperature applied to it. Multiple FBG sensors with different wavelengths can be linked along the same fiber and detected independently by the interrogation system, which builds up the distributed strain/temperature information of a large structure, such as bridges and buildings. Long period gratings (LPG) work in different way. LPG sensor detects the index of refraction changes external to the fiber cladding. With proper binding of chemical/biological agents or simply exposed the fiber to the environment, index of refraction changes will induce the spectrum changes of the LPG.“The FBG optic sensor is so compact and lightweight that it can be easily attached to the structure or transducer module. The fiber and optic signal is hazardous free to the environment that makes FBG optic sensor applicable to strict environment and critical missions.”, said Alpha Tsai, VP of Marketing, Broptics. “Application areas have been widely explored by researchers since 1990s, mainly includes civil structure, buildings, aerospace, automobile, chemical and biomedical engineering…etc. Broptics is aiming to supply the building block component, FBG sensor, to the sensor system integrators and consultants.”Broptics has designed the OS-1500 series of FBG optic sensor for strain and temperature measurement. The sensor can be easily detected by the most popular interrogation system, such as Micron Optics FBG-SLI. Individual sensor or sensor array are available at C-band (1550nm range). Athermal package is also available when a reference sensor is required. Broptics Communications Corp.
