LISBON, Portugal -- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that it has been selected by ZON Multimedia, the leader of the Pay TV market in Portugal, to supply the active equipments necessary for the deployment of a gigabit passive optical network (GPON)-based fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) architecture that will support the delivery of a wide range of next-generation broadband services - such as advanced high-definition television (HDTV) services, VoIP and video on demand.

ZON Multimedia will leverage Alcatel-Lucent’s award-winning GPON platform in new expansion areas and in a network development environment where HFC/FTTH technologies coexist. ZON Multimedia will also rely on Alcatel-Lucent’s expertise in professional services -including installation, OSS integration, commissioning services and maintenance.

“Having over 1.5 million customers, ZON is the largest pay-TV operator in Portugal. As a leader, we want to keep on providing end-users with the best solutions on the market,” said Paulo Ribeiro, Board Member of ZON TV Cabo. “Though our network is very competitive and allowing us to successfully offer bandwidth-demanding services, such as HDTV and high-speed Internet, we decided to explore parallel ways to bring the best of multimedia applications to our customers. Alcatel-Lucent’s proven GPON solution and its experience in deploying fiber networks will help us introduce this new technology into our network – enabling us to expand our product and services offer to our customers. This technological option of investing on FTTH in geographical areas still with no coverage was already part of our plans of geographic expansion and it was already foreseen on our investment plans. It is our expectation to keep up with the annual rhythm of the networks extension of 50 to 100 thousand homes passed within the next years,” he added.
