ALAMEDA, Calif. -- UTStarcom, Inc. (Nasdaq: UTSI), a global leader in IP-based, end-to-end networking solutions and services, today announced that it has signed an expansion contract with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) in India to deploy 90,000 lines of UTStarcom's industry-leading AN-2000(TM) IP-based Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (IP DSLAM) solution in the operator's growing nationwide broadband network. BSNL is the incumbent and largest telecommunications services provider in India, with a presence in the fixed-line, cellular mobile, long distance and data markets.

This contract represents an expansion on a previously announced deployment of its AN-2000 IP DSLAM and related equipment for the second phase of BSNL's National Internet Backbone project. BSNL's goal is to construct a broadband network across 198 cities in India to provide reliable, "always on" high-speed Internet connectivity and other value-added services and applications. UTStarcom's IP DSLAM platform is a key enabler for BSNL's triple play services strategy.

"Much like Softbank is in Japan, BSNL has grown to become a showcase of UTStarcom's broad product portfolio as they continue to depend on our innovative, IP-based solutions in order to expand their growing nationwide broadband network across India," said Vijay Yadav, managing director of South Asia operations at UTStarcom, Inc. "By deploying UTStarcom technologies in their networks, operators worldwide can expect to receive affordable, reliable products that increase subscriber revenue and speed return on investment."
