Roadblock for Reding

8:30 AM -- It looks as if European Commissioner Viviane Reding isn't going to have her way on everything. She may have to back down on her grand plan to create a European FCC super-regulator, because the European Parliament opposes the idea. (See Showdown in Brussels, Ofcom Opposes Euro FCC, Reding Wants 'European FCC', Reding Faces Resistance, and Reding Rattles Regulatory Saber.)

Reding's attitude to telecom regulation can be summed up by the saying, "If you're not part of the steamroller, you're part of the road." But her efforts to overhaul European regulation are starting to run out of steam as she meets with resistance to her proposals. She is expected to strike a compromise with the European Parliament on the super-regulator issue before a key vote on her telecom reform package in June.
