Deutsche Telekom's 'open RAN' plan slips after Huawei reprieve
Deutsche Telekom had promised 3,000 open RAN sites by the end of 2026, but the date has now been changed to 2027. And Germany's refusal to ban Huawei has implications.

[Shenzhen, China, September 10, 2024] Oi S.A. (Oi) and Huawei signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on fiber broadband development towards the F5.5G era. The MoU aims to accelerate the implementation of Oi's Fiber X strategy by building the leading home networking FTTR (fiber to the room) and the smooth Wi-Fi experience for Brazilian users. At the same time, both two parties will explore more B2B innovations in smart campuses, smart hospitals, smart cities and other scenarios.
Fiber network is critical infrastructure for the digital economy. According to Omdia, gigabit broadband users have reached over 250 million, and are expected to reach 425 million by the end of 2025. Fiber broadband package speed has increased 10 times in the past decade, reaching 400 Mbit/s on average. In Brazil, FBB services are advancing rapidly. Oi’s Fiber X Premium service (FTTR package) is bringing leading home networking service to every family in Brazil. Through this MoU, Oi and Huawei will strengthen the cooperation in future in FTTH and FTTR business success, and form a joint B2B innovative team to explore the Brazilian enterprise market.
