STOCKHOLM -- Syntune AB, a developer of innovative single-chip tunable lasers and transmitters today announced that the European Commission has turned to Syntune AB to assist in developing next generation WDM PON technology. The project, called GigaWaM, was initiated by Ignis Photonyx and will be technically lead from Ignis PLC-fab in Birkeröd, Denmark. One of the major goals for this initiative is to provide a cost per user that is less than that offered by current GPON systems, while at the same time increasing the bandwidth per user by more than a factor of ten. This will be accomplished through the development of low cost components with a high level of integration.

Tunability is a key to the success of any program that uses wavelength division multiplexing. Syntune’s monolithic approach is the best choice for a high volume, low cost solution. “It is clear that people want more and more bandwidth at the home,” stated Syntune CEO Patrik Evaldsson. “The best way to make any FTTH system future proof is to give individuals their own wavelength. This creates the most flexible system in the market.”
