MILAN, Italy -- Pirelli Broadband Solutions announced today that it will collaborate with Telecom Italia, together with Alcatel-Lucent and Italtel, at the C5 World Forum on a working demonstration of Fiber-to-the-Building/Fiber-to-the-cabinet (FTTB/FTTC) using WDM-PON technology. The C5 World Forum will take place at the Fiera Milano Congressi, Milan, between 27-28 March 2007.

The Pirelli stand (no. 4028) will act as the access central office, with a WDM-PON optical line termination (OLT) unit delivering one optical channel to each of the following stands, which for demonstration purposes will represent city buildings; Telecom Italia (stand no. 2001), Alcatel-Lucent (stand no. 2015) and Italtel (stand nos. 3001/4001). Each stand "building" will have an optical network termination (ONT) unit to receive one Gigabit Ethernet bandwidth for the delivery of premium telecoms services.

Mauro Sacchetto, CEO at Pirelli Broadband Solutions, said: "With the arrival of faster broadband access technologies such as VDSL2 and FTTx, the metro and access networks will take the brunt of the stress. Our systems and subsystems are designed especially for optimizing the metro and access networks and providing the necessary flexibility to accommodate various network architectures."
