LONDON -- Fujikura Europe Ltd, has today announced the launch of its first commercially available pluggable GPON SFP transceiver. The product is aimed at FTTx network system vendors in the dynamic European market.

The Fujikura GPON SFP (Gigabit Passive Optical Network small form factor pluggable) transceiver offers true GPON G.984.2 performance. GPON is an evolution of the Broadband PON (BPON) standard and offers network providers enhanced security, greater network flexibility and higher bit-rates than competing PON technologies. The SFP (small form factor pluggable) format enables reduced carrier OPEX through decreased ‘down time’ and improved inventory management. The pluggable format also enables operators to scale their deployments as demand increases, adding further GPON lines to meet requirements.

“GPON offers both the required network performance and considerable reduction in carrier opex – it is potentially the dominant FTTx technology in Europe and is gaining real traction in North America with support from major carriers,” said Fujikura Europe’s Simon Richardson. “The European market is dynamic and varied, with incumbent telecom operators across the continent yet to show unified commitment to one technology. At Fujikura we have an established offering for EPON – built on our extensive experience in the Japanese market – but feel that we can capture the market for GPON transceivers with this product launch.”
