Where Is FiOS TV?

3:50 PM -- Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) was very pleased with itself today for its deal to push FiOS into two huge Manhattan apartment complexes: Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village. (See FiOS Reaches More MDUs.) And pleased it should be -- this is a big customer base it has just been given access to. I've gotten lost many times trying to find a party inside the vast labyrinth that is Stuy Town. It's a big step forward for a company whose footprint is 25 percent MDUs. (See Fiber-to-the-MDU: Verizon's Manhattan Project.)

But keep in mind, like the rest of New York City, the residents of these massive MDU complexes, will only be receiving FiOS phone and Internet. There will be no triple play offering as the company is STILL working out a cable franchise with the city. (See NYC Still Waits for FiOS.)

It's hard to tell who is being the stubborn one in these negotiations. The process of obtaining a cable franchise is apparently a secretive one. Given how dull a process it is, that's probably a good thing for all of us. But we're now going on almost three years since Verizon initiated talks for obtaining the right to sell video in New York City. re: Where Is FiOS TV? Verizon is following a deliberate and complex process with respect to obtaining a TV franchise from the City of New York. While as a policy we do not comment on negotiations, our goal continues to be providing choice and competition to the traditional monopoly TV market.
