Russians Love DSL
Russian carrier Comstar United Telesystems JSC (London: CMST) says its broadband customer base in Moscow almost doubled during 2007, ending the year at 695,000.
In the fourth quarter alone, Comstar says it added 228,000 DSL subscribers to its books.
In addition, the operator has begun an access network modernization plan, including some fiber-to-the-curb (FTTC) rollouts, to help cope with further demand in Moscow, home to more than 10 million people. (See Comstar Reports Q3.)
Comstar isn't the only operator meeting broadband needs in the Russian capital: Golden Telecom Inc. is also aiming to hook up millions of customers in Moscow and other major cities. (See Golden Boasts Broadband Success and Vimpelcom to Buy Golden.)
