Netflix Could Pay Big for Starz Renewal

Here's what's turning cable's crank as the week gets underway.

  • Netflix Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX) expects it may have to fork over US$200 million per year to renew its movie licensing deal with Starz Entertainment LLC , up from its current $30 million annual price tag. (See Netflix to Wait 90 Days for New Starz Fare .)

  • Comcast Corp. (Nasdaq: CMCSA, CMCSK) has added a 3G/4G mobile hotspot to its Internet 2go product menu, offering subs a pocket-sized device that runs on Clearwire LLC (Nasdaq: CLWR)'s WiMax network and Sprint Corp. (NYSE: S)'s 3G service.

  • Dish Network LLC (Nasdaq: DISH) will soon begin selling DSL service in Colorado and experiment with a triple-play bundle about five months after buying Denver-based CLEC Liberty Bell.

  • Some Comcast subs sill soon be able to use TiVo Inc. (Nasdaq: TIVO)'s Premiere DVR to access the MSO's Xfinity VoD service, solving the mystery of an image TiVo released last year that included a Comcast graphic on TiVo's user interface. (See TiVo Building tru2way Version of New Interface.)

  • Two advocacy groups have urged the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to probe AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T)'s new broadband consumption caps and find out why AT&T thinks it needs them in the first place. (See AT&T Enforces Broadband Caps and AT&T to Fit Subs With Broadband Caps .)

  • While Rentrak Corp. (Nasdaq: RENT) is releasing the top-10 weekly cable VoD movies, the research firm only discloses how much revenue each movie generates from box-office sales, and doesn't include details on how much pay-TV providers generate from VoD sales. The King's Speech was the top VoD movie the week of April 19, followed by Little Fockers. (See Rentrak Scores MSO Deals.)

  • The Comcast Media Center (CMC) rebuilt its origination and playout facility in Denver to handle In Demand LLC 's live sports and pay-per-view content.
