Bridging the WiMax Divide

9:40 AM -- A couple of demonstrations at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona show that the traditional cellular and broadband wireless worlds are coming a little closer together and getting cozy.

Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) and Samsung Corp. are showing off a dual-mode GSM/EDGE and mobile WiMax device as well as network infrastructure. The solution will allow for seamless handover between the cellular and WiMax networks. (See AlcaLu, Samsung Do Dual-Mode.)

The first device is a PDA from Samsung, while the 802.16e network equipment is from AlcaLu. The solution extends to GSM operators the opportunity to deploy WiMax in areas where better broadband data coverage in needed.

In other dual-mode news from Barcelona, NXP Semiconductors N.V. (Nasdaq: NXPI) is demonstrating a dual-mode EDGE/WiMax reference design that will be available in the second half of 2008.
