Brazil Oi Embraces the Gigabit Everywhere Era

At the 2023 Green All-Optical Network Forum held by IDATE in Barcelona, rogerio Takayanagi, Senior Vice President, Chief Strategy Officer, and Operating Officer of Oi Retail and Enterprise Business in Brazil, delivered a keynote speech titled "Embrace the Gigabit Everywhere Era". He shared Oi's experience and achievements in all-optical strategy and premium home broadband, and elaborated Oi's new plan and vision for developing fiber broadband and FTTR services.

Figure 1:

First, Rogerio Takayanagi reviewed the impressive achievements of Oi in the years of transformation.

Brazil is the largest and most populous country in Latin America. Oi is the largest telecom operator in Brazil. It has more than 400,000 km of fibers and provides fiber access networks for more than 2,300 cities.

After Oi's transformation, Oi regards fiber services as most important in the future. Since 2018, Oi has made great progress by increasing investment, expanding fiber networks, and providing services with premium customer experience. By the third quarter of 2022, Oi has completed 18.2 million HPs and 4 million HCs in 250 cities in Brazil. The market share of FTTH fiber broadband reached 34%, ranking first in Brazil's fiber broadband market. In terms of digital services, Oi has the largest number of long-term NetFlix video users in Brazil. In the past three years, Oi's broadband revenue has increased by 94%. Oi also released the all-optical brand "Oi FIBRA X" in 2022, providing users with high-speed fiber broadband and home Wi-Fi services.

According to Rogerio Takayanagi, Oi will continue to increase investment in fibers. It is estimated that by the end of 2025, Oi will have a maximum of 35 million HPs, maintaining its leading position in the industry. He also said that with the development of fiber broadband and increasing demand for 4K/8K video, cloud gaming, video office, and XR, home Wi-Fi has become a bottleneck for user experience. For example, in Brazil, 74% of users live in apartments of 80 square meters or larger. However, about 44% of users say that their Wi-Fi cannot reach all corners at home, and 50% of users say that the Wi-Fi experience is slow or the connection is unstable. When faced with a poor connection experience, users often cannot resolve Wi-Fi problems on their own. In this case, operators need to send technicians to visit users' homes, resulting in inefficient troubleshooting.

Against this backdrop, Oi released a brand-new Oi FIBRA X brand in 2022. That is, Oi uses high-speed Wi-Fi solutions such as FTTR to provide reliable connections and premium broadband experience for each room in a house, enabling users to enjoy digital life. To this end, Oi has made a series of innovations and explorations in the following aspects:

  1. In 2022, Oi joined hands with Huawei to release the first FTTR for Home solution in Latin America and successfully piloted the solution. The solution provides users with 400 Mbps to 1 Gbps high-speed broadband and Wi-Fi services. Flexible packages enable users to experience and subscribe to Oi FIBRA X services more conveniently. According to user feedback, the original Wi-Fi bottleneck is resolved and high-speed Wi-Fi experience is available in every room. Oi will fully promote FTTR-based Oi FIBRA X network services in nine cities, including Sao Paulo.

  2. Oi uses a digital operations platform to optimize Wi-Fi experience. According to Oi, up to 68% of home network problems come from Wi-Fi coverage and experience. Therefore, Oi uses SmartWi-Fi digital operations platform to improve Wi-Fi experience, diagnose faults, and improve user satisfaction.

  3. Based on the Oi FIBRA X all-optical network, Oi will provide premium scenario-based broadband services for homes and small and micro enterprises in the future. For example, Oi will provide high-speed broadband services for scenarios such as online learning, eSports, and live broadcast at home. For small and micro enterprises, FTTR for SME can extend fibers to business scenarios such as coffee bars and hotels, facilitating their digital transformation.

At last, Rogerio Takayanagi said that Oi's vision is to become a leader in digital solutions and fiber connections. Oi will adhere to the all-optical strategy and continuously invest in the premium HBB brand FIBRA X. FTTR is an advanced home networking solution that brings ultra-gigabit rate, wide coverage, and high concurrency to end users. Using this solution, Oi extends fibers to all rooms or areas of a home, bringing differentiated and premium experience to customers to accelerate digital transformation in Brazil.
