BellSouth Hits 200,000 DirecTV Subs

Satellite TV service continues to pay off well for the large regional phone companies. In the latest sign, BellSouth Corp. announced Wednesday that it has now added 200,000 DirecTV subscribers since launching the service in August. BellSouth said it picked up almost 109,000 DirecTV customers in the fourth quarter alone. The telco's residential phone customers can add the satellite TV service, with its more than 125 channels, to their bundles for as much as a monthly $10 discount. The nation's two biggest Bells, Verizon Communications and SBC Communications, have also been posting strong results from their new satellite TV partnerships. In its most recent earnings report, for instance, SBC said it added 97,000 EchoStar customers in the fourth quarter to end 2004 with a total of 323,000 video subscribers.
