Back to the Future
Employees of the company here say they're thinking it over.
Ericsson debuted its Marconi-branded OMS 2400 Optical Multiservice Packet Transport platforms this year. It expects to ship its OMS 1410, a smaller, next-gen system, in the first quarter of 2008. That device will be a 2U box providing eight plug-in modules with an aggregate capacity of up to 2.5 Gbit/s, the company says.
Pure packet switching is cool and all, but Ericsson guys at this show say the company sees that native Sonet support is important to Tier 1 carriers that want to offer metro Ethernet services, yet still need to support an older TDM infrastructure.
So they may come up with something else to give Fujitsu and others a headache in the North American transport market. We'll see.
