Avaya Keeps It Simple for U.S. Soccer Team

Network equipment supplier Avaya Inc., which built the voice and data network for this year's FIFA World Cup in Japan and Korea, has also taken the personal needs of the participating U.S. team to its heart.

It has built wireless LANs at the two hotels hosting the team and delegation to give them continuous and easy-to-use Internet and email account access.

But it has born in mind the IT capabilities, and ability to multitask, of the players. According to Doug Gardner, Avaya's managing director for the FIFA World Cup program, it was important that the network be very simple to operate. "We want our players to be able to concentrate on match play, not on complicated network operations," Gardner said.

Absolutely! We don't want them worrying about firewalls and data rates when they run out on the pitch, do we?
