ZURICH, Switzerland -- Avalon Photonics have just launched a single-mode Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSELs) with a wavelength of 850nm specifically addressing applications in the Telecom Access space. These VCSELs combine fundamental longitudinal and transversal mode operation with a wide mode – hop free operation range. The thickness of the active layer in a VCSEL determines its emission wavelength. The active region in the Avalon Photonics product is just one wavelength thick, which ensures that only one axial mode is supported in the cavity. This means the VCSEL operates in the fundamental longitudinal mode, which ensures good coupling into single mode fibres used by service providers in “last mile” applications for the Access market. Avalon Photonics has been a specialist supplier of short wavelength VCSELs for use in absorption spectroscopy for several years. Prior to its foundation last year the group developed an industry lead developing single-mode 760 nm VCSEL under the CSEM (Swiss Centre for Electronics and Microtechnology SA) umbrella based in Zurich.Avalon Photonics Ltd.
