DANVILLE, Calif. -- The OpenSAF Foundation today announced that Wind River Systems, Inc., a leader in Device Software, and embedded Linux distributor is the newest member of the OpenSAF Foundation. As part of the OpenSAF project, Wind River joins other industry leaders to develop and create a reference implementation of high availability (HA) base platform middleware based on SA Forum specifications and SCOPE Alliance recommendations. Wind River will also support the efforts of its developers who choose to contribute time and expertise to accelerate the completion of the OpenSAF project. In addition to contributing to the OpenSAF project, Wind River joins the Board of Directors of the OpenSAF Foundation to help drive the adoption of a High Availability Middleware implementation of OpenSAF throughout the telecommunications and networking industries.

"Wind River is a strong supporter of the open source movement and we believe there is a clear trend in the industry to move open source software up the stack beyond the operating system. HA Middleware is a key building block that is now being addressed by the open source community, just like the operating system with Linux was 10 years ago," said Glenn Seiler, director of Networking Strategy and Solutions, Wind River. "The OpenSAF Foundation is a frontrunner in promoting next-generation open source HA solutions, and Wind River is delighted to join this movement."

The telecommunications industry is shifting towards open specifications and free open source software (FOSS) to reduce development costs, time to market and enhance vendor interoperability. Launched in January 2008, the OpenSAF Foundation is a nonprofit organization whose charter is to help support an Open Source high availability base platform middleware consistent with the Service Availability(TM) Forum (SA Forum(TM)). The OpenSAF Foundation will provide an environment for the implementation and testing of Carrier Grade base platform middleware that focuses on the priorities and gaps identified by the SCOPE Alliance. The addition of Wind River will provide a broader base of experience to support these activities.

The OpenSAF's initial code base was contributed by Emerson Network Power and is licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License, version 2.1 (LGPL v2.1). Anyone can participate in the OpenSAF project by downloading the code, subject to accepting the terms and conditions of the LGPL v2.1 license.
