AT&T Sells 5.1M Smartphones in Q2
The operator says it sold 5.1 million smartphones during the three months to the end of June, with 3.7 million of those being iPhones. Of those Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) device sales, 22 percent were to new subscribers.
Total wireless revenues were up 4.8 percent year-on-year to $16.4 billion. Wireless data revenues increased by $1 billion, or 18.8 percent, from the year-earlier quarter to $6.4 billion.
Ma Bell added 1.3 million new wireless customers in the quarter, of which 320,000 signed on for a monthly contract. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had expected about 233,000 contract customers to be added.
Overall, AT&T reported second-quarter net income of $3.9 billion, or $0.66 per share, up from $3.6 billion, or $0.60 per share, in the previous year on revenues of $31.6 billion, up 0.3 percent versus 2011 quarter.
Analysts polled by Reuters had expected revenues of $31.7 billion.
