Vodafone's $554M India Bill

6:40 AM -- Vodafone India has been asked by the Indian Supreme Court to pay an initial 25 billion Indian rupees (US$554 million) of a disputed tax bill to the Indian authorities, even though the operator is still contesting the tax claim, reports The Economic Times. (See India to Vodafone: $2.5B Please.)

Vodafone will have to pay the deposit, and make guarantees for the remainder of the $2.5 billion tax claim, within the next eight weeks. The company will get the entire amount back if it wins the case.

The legal battle relates to Vodafone's acquisition of Hutchinson Essar in 2007. (See Vodafone Wins Battle to Buy Essar.)
