Apple's Asian '08

8:40 AM -- Local reports suggest that Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) will introduce the iPhone in Japan later in 2008. Meanwhile, the Mac maker is said to be in talks with China Unicom Ltd. (NYSE: CHU)and China Mobile Ltd. (NYSE: CHL) to launch the device in China.

A move to China would open up the iPhone to a massive new audience. China Mobile and China Unicom have over 500 million users between them. Many of the users, however, are unlikely to be able to afford the hundreds of dolllars that Apple charges for the iPhone.

re: Apple's Asian '08 Japan should just go nuts over this thing, don't you think? (Caveat: I'm fourth-generation; all I know about Japan is what I read in Wired.)

Weren't other phone manufacturers working on multitouch interfaces of their own, though? The iPhone might arrive in Asia just in time to face some head-on competition. (Caveat: I know even less about cellphone roadmaps than I do about Japan.)

re: Apple's Asian '08 HTC is supposed to have a touch-screen, yes. I wonder if the iPhone will be fast enough and small enough for the Japanese market myself. The early word out of Europe suggests that its not as hot there as it was the U.S., or at least that's my impression.
