Apple Unstrung

5:30 PM -- There's one wireless device I'm really looking forward to from Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL), and it isn't the iPhone.

What I really want is a wireless iPod that you don't have to plug in to download songs. Is that too much to ask?

Rumors about a wireless iPod started to emerge back in 2004. Despite related patents and a lot of excited chatter, however, no wirelessly enabled iPod has yet emerged on the market.

It wouldn't even have to be that complicated; just something WiFi-based that could transfer songs when in close proximity with your computer. Hell, even Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT)'s Zune player is wireless -- although it is designed to share rather than sync files.

I suspect that Apple might not wish to launch a wireless player right now, however, because it could be perceived as appealing to the same people that would buy the iPhone. Not me though, I'd prefer a dedicated wireless music player, I think; although I reserve final judgment until I've actually tried an iPhone.

re: Apple Unstrung Seems like others are getting to a WiFi MP3 player though.
