BOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Appian Communications™, the first to deliver an optical edge solution that opens optical networks to high growth packet service revenues, and Sumitomo Corporation, a top tier Japanese trading company identified with excellence and vision in providing technology based solutions, today announced a multi-million dollar agreement under which Sumitomo will be the master distributor of Appian’s award-winning Optical Services Activation Platform (OSAP™) to the Japanese market. The companies also disclosed that Sumitomo and its wholly owned subsidiary, Presidio Venture Partners, have made a strategic investment in Appian. This agreement expands Sumitomo’s leadership portfolio of broadband products, enabling carriers to deliver next generation packet services over the extensive fiber network now under deployment in Japan. It also provides Appian with an established, highly respected partner for entering the rapidly growing optical networking market in Japan.

“Japanese carriers are making a significant investment in fiber optic infrastructure and Appian’s OSAP fills an important strategic position in Sumitomo’s optical networking portfolio,“ noted Mr. Shigeo Kurimoto, General Manager of Sumitomo Corporation’s Information Electronics Department. “We are already seeing strong customer interest in the OSAP’s ability to leverage existing optical infrastructure in the delivery of highly differentiated, high bandwidth packet services.”
