New line of hybridized photodetectors offer user-setable gain, deliver maximum flexibility for developers and system builders

CAMARILLO, Calif. -- Advanced Photonix, Inc. has introduced a new line of hybridized photodetectors that deliver maximum operational flexibility for developers and system builders. The products consist of a PIN photodiode and transimpedance amplifier integrated within a hermetically sealed TO-5 package. An external feedback resistor and capacitor allow the transimpedance gain and bandwidth to be set by the user. This provides a simple means of matching detector gain to the incident light level, even if that has not been determined in advance. This versatility allows detector system performance to be quickly adjusted during the development process, or optimized to a particular value by OEMs during system assembly. To gain the most benefit from this flexibility, all system components have been designed to enable operation over a wide range of transimpedance gains and bandwidths. Specifically, a low dark current photodiode is mated with a low input bias current, 28 MHz Gain Bandwidth Product amplifier to yield a detector that can be used over a large range of transimpedance gains and bandwidths. Devices are available with UV, blue/visible, or red enhanced photodiodes for high performance in any spectral region. Standard detector active areas are 5.1 mm2 and 100mm2, but different detector sizes and amplifier characteristics can be produced for OEMs upon request. Typical applications for these products include medical instrumentation, metrology equipment, industrial sensing, pollution monitoring and fiber optic gyroscopes. Advanced Photonix Inc.
