Struggling handheld maker Palm Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM) keeps on trying to expand its presence in the enterprise market, today announcing a deal to make corporate data available to PDA users via IBM Corp.'s (NYSE: IBM) WebSphere Everyplace Access (WEA) middleware suite.

The deal is supposed to make it easier for corporate clients to get access to Notes or Exchange email and calendar information and IBM's Sametime Instant Messaging (IM) package using their handheld computers. A client's IT department can also get a little more ambitious with the WEA toolkit, building Palm-based front ends for field and sales-force applications. The IBM product, which has parts of the Palm operating system built into the backend, will be available later this quarter, according to an IBM spokesperson.

Separately, Big Blue has signed a reseller agreement to sell Palm handhelds to the corporate market.
