WILMINGTON, Mass. -- Agiltron, Inc., a vertically integrated manufacturer of premium fiberoptic components, today announced the immediately availability of its all-solid-state SS Series Variable Optical Attenuators (VOA). These devices offer extremely fast response time of less than 100 microseconds and unprecedented lifetime. They are based on the same inorganic crystal core as Agiltron’s CrystaLatch™ optical switch that has been tested through 75 billion cycles without failure. According to Dr. Jack Salerno, Vice President of Strategic Business, “Agiltron’s SS series variable optical attenuators are designed to meet the most demanding operating requirements of ultra-high reliability and fast response time with minimum mechanical footprint. The devices are particularly well suited for continuous power regulation operation and optical transient suppression, as well as analog signal modulation applications.”

The SS series variable fiber optic attenuator provides electrical control of optical power by utilizing a patent pending non-mechanical configuration and activated via a low voltage electrical current control signal without the need for special circuitry. The solid state optical crystal design eliminates all mechanical movement and organic materials. The SS Series VOA products are available in either normally-open or normally-closed configuration and with an integrated output tap option. The device is also available in a polarization maintaining version. The VOA is driven with an electrical current at low voltage and the attenuation can be continuously adjusted with the applied current.
