DALLAS -- ADAPTIX, a pioneering developer of orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) technology, has joined the Open Base Station Architecture Initiative (OBSAI), an organization formed to create open specifications for base station architectures. ADAPTIX is a premier supplier of OFDMA-based micro-cell base stations that deliver 802.16e-compliant Mobile WiMAX services.

"OBSAI welcomes the addition of ADAPTIX to its growing membership," said Tero Mustala, Chairman of OBSAI. "As OBSAI continues to gain popularity as a key base station architecture of the future, having members like ADAPTIX, who bring leading edge expertise in the areas of OFDMA and Mobile WiMAX, is beneficial to our common efforts."

OBSAI has just released a full set of interface, hardware and test specifications compatible with all of the main air interface standards (GSM, GSM/EDGE, WCDMA, CDMA and WiMAX). By standardizing base station modules, manufacturers can focus their differentiation efforts within the base station. Such a plan encourages continuing innovation and increasingly cost-effective products. For ADAPTIX, rather than taking a traditional single macro-cell approach, the company is focused on what it believes to be a more cost-effective means of delivering high bandwidth service with an innovative micro-cell base station approach. That approach uses ADAPTIX's patented OFDMA-based technology and powerful, but compact, base stations to provide a much higher consistent throughput for all mobile users within a coverage area.

"OBSAI is taking the right approach to build a solid foundation for future base station architectures," said ADAPTIX Vice President of Marketing and Product Management Byron Young. "We believe that an open standard approach will help base station system builders such as ADAPTIX obtain best-of-breed primary components and subsystems from a greater variety of potential suppliers."
