Transforming to Digital Operation Platform to Win the 5G Enterprise Market

Currently, over 100 carriers have launched their 5G service globally. It is now time to unleash the potential of 5G business value. But where is the north-star of 5G and how do we achieve business success? According to research from Keystone Analysis and Huawei, by 2025 carriers will have a total of 1,654bn USD worth of opportunities in the market. And it also reveals that 480bn USD comes from 5G connectivity and 370bn USD from 5G vertical services. This is an increase of 150% in revenue from 5G vertical connectivity.

Figure 1:

Over the last 12 months, there has been a strong shift towards enterprise market in most carriers, especially in verticals such as manufacturing, oil & gas, transportation etc. However, the challenges are the ability to offer tailor-made services in a timely, cost-effective, agile and scalable manner, to enable carriers to adopt new business models in tackling verticals.

During the recent Huawei Software Forum 2020 the ex-president of TMF, Martin Creaner, pointed out:

One of the key areas is going to be really important is platforms. And how a carrier develops the platforms that underpin the services. We need to develop the right platforms with the right sort of capability and then we need to develop the right business models. The next-generation BSS (Business Support System) is going to be hugely important.

To share some examples: In China, a steel factory uses 5G technology to build a private dedicated network to meet the requirements, such as Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) latency within 30ms at a rate of over 50Mbits/s of uplink in the production plant. By upgrading the electromechanical technology on the crane and deploying 5G CPE and HD cameras, the steel factory establishes a 5G link between the crane and remote control system, enabling technicians to control the crane in the comfort central office. This has been preventing employees from being exposed to hazardous high temperature and noisy environment, thus improving work safety and eliminating accidents. In addition, it has also reduced operation cost by 20%, improved production efficiency and product quality. The digital operation platform with a self-management portal, an open marketplace of Network as a Service and applications, allows flexible bundling, easy purchase and automatic activation which are imperative in the new 5G production scenario.

Another example, a European operator is providing a campus deployment with the scope of SIM card management capabilities on the platform, allowing the customers to manage the SIM card connection instances themselves. With the network self-service, they are able to query in real-time statistical information of the network. The customer portal capability further enables the enterprise to have a great level of control that is required within their own campus. It also requires flexible bundle offering capability to ease onboard, market, sales and operation.

In summary, the new 5G enterprise operation platform needs to have a certain level of business process orchestration, be open for vertical industries to initiate a new 5G slice or a private line, and manage the seamless integration of edge in cloud, in network, enabled through a customer portal.

Huawei continues to pilot new 5G enterprise operations with our valued carriers globally. Huawei’s Communication Service Management Function plus (CSMF+), is based on the global best practices and with our leading development principles, which features in cloud native, agile and open, to allow for diverse vertical applications.

Cloud Native Platform

Comparing with the traditional waterfall development model, Huawei CSMF+ platform is designed with cloud native architecture now. With the DevOps and CI/CD processes, it leads to faster development and implementation from months to weeks or days. In addition, it supports the future consumer market, enterprise market, home market and IoT business etc. Delivering a cloud based platform with pre-existing business processes which comes as a standard with centralized operations to manage 5G business becomes very cost effective for carriers. It separates the business and technology layer achieving business flexibility. We strongly urge carriers to build such a new digital operation platform that fits well for 5G business and future evolution

Business Oriented Agility

In the 5G era, it is predictable that there will be massive quantities of offering to fit in different verticals. This can be challenging for both vendors and carriers. Hence the BSS platform must have critical capability to be agile and business oriented. The Huawei CSMF+ platform offers out of the box templates and processes which deliver different industrial scenarios. The platform is also agile and configurable allowing to shorten the TIME TO MARKET to days rather than weeks or months. We also provide carriers and partners with testing tool and a development environment thus enabling them to quickly deliver local requirement. This allows 5G Carriers to support their business partners to quickly expand and upgrade their services to fit into the vertical Industry.

Open and Ready for Future

Huawei CSMF + platform is embedded with mature business enablement capabilities that help Carrier’s to monetize new 5G opportunities and handle complex 5G use cases. These capabilities are abstracted and encapsulated into APIs for industry use. There are 3 levels of openness:

  • Ready to use open APIs. We offer ready to use APIs in the areas of slicing management API, member management API and slicing monitoring API.

  • Design and build new APIs as required using integration tools,

  • Open for onsite agile development. Thus carriers can effectively accelerate concept-to-cash, reduce network & IT costs, and enhance digital customer experience.

As Martin Creaner concluded during the Huawei Software Forum 2020:

Platform based approaches are likely to offer the best chance of success in the future digital economy. Advanced BSS capabilities will be required to enable enterprise business opportunities.

Industry digitalization is already taking place. The pace is only going to accelerate from now on. Carriers will need to take immediate action to transform their BSS systems to enable the future 5G enterprise operations and to accelerate 5G monetization.
