ZTE Lands OTE DSL Deal

VENICE, Italy -- Broadband World Forum Europe -- Chinese vendor ZTE Corp. is set to announce a DSLAM deal with Greek incumbent operator OTE S.A., Light Reading has learned.

The contract follows OTE's deployment of ZTE's DSL gear for this summer's Olympic Games and represents a breakthrough in Europe for the Chinese firm (see OTE Picks ZTE for Olympic DSL). ZTE has been involved in negotiations with other major European carriers, but this represents the firm's first public announcement of a major broadband access infrastructure deal in the region (see BT Moves Ahead With Mega Project).

Details of the OTE deal are expected to be announced later today (Wednesday September 22) at the Broadband World Forum Europe 2004.

ZTE has been building on its success in China, where it recently landed a major DSL contract with China Telecommunications Corp. (NYSE: CHA), by winning more and more international deals in the past year for both fixed and wireless equipment (see ZTE Doubles International Revenues). To date these have been primarily in emerging markets such as Latin America and Asia/Pacific, though the company has been more aggressively targeting large Western European players of late, such as Cable & Wireless plc (NYSE: CWP) and Vodafone Group plc (NYSE: VOD).

ZTE is one of more than 80 companies exhibiting here in Venice, where many DSL vendors are jostling for the attention of visiting European operators (see Vendors Claim DSLAM Breakthrough). It is also one of many companies showcasing solutions aimed at the delivery of video and TV content over broadband networks (see ZTE Will Unveil IP TV in Venice).
